IEP Conference Overview
The IEP Conference is a unique Canadian initiative for Internationally Educated Professionals (IEPs) taking interactive learning, economic development, and stakeholder awareness to unprecedented levels. Every delegate can engage in a myriad of career and professional development experiences guided and encouraged every step of the way by subject matter experts from licensing bodies, educational institutions, professional associations, skilled facilitators, employers and successful IEPs.

Olivia Chow is the 66th Mayor of Toronto, the first person of Asian descent to serve as Mayor, and the first woman since the six municipalities of Metro Toronto were amalgamated into one in 1998.

Steve Teekens is the Executive Director at Na-Me-Res (Native Men’s Residence) where he has worked since 2008. He has been working with the marginalized and homeless sector in Toronto since 1995. Steve is a member of Nipissing First Nation, has a master’s degree in public administration from Queen’s University. Steve is very active in Toronto’s Indigenous Community where he volunteers at Toronto Aboriginal Social Services Council (TASSC), Aboriginal Legal Services Community Council Program. Steve also teaches traditional drumming and to the youth and men at various Native organizations inside and outside of Toronto. Steve enjoys working and volunteering in the Indigenous Community and wishes to see people overcome their obstacles and find the resilience in themselves to succeed in life.
Faisal Kazi is the President and CEO of Siemens Canada. Mr. Kazi is responsible for leading the overall strategic management, direction and leadership of Siemens activities in Canada.
In addition to his role as President and CEO, Mr. Kazi is responsible for the leadership of the Smart Infrastructure business and serves as a board member of multiple Siemens affiliates in Canada.
Mr. Kazi joined Siemens in 1990 and has worked in various areas of the organization, including Siemens Energy, Industry, IT and Infrastructure businesses in Germany, The Netherlands, Brazil and the United States. In 2011, he joined Siemens Canada as the regional and sales head of the Transformers business in North and South America. He has also led the Siemens Transmission division for North America.
As founder and Chairman of Portland Holdings. Michael Lee-Chin is widely regarded as a visionary entrepreneur whose philosophy of “doing well, by doing good” has resulted in extraordinary business success and inspiring philanthropic initiatives.
Portland Holding is a privately held investment company that manages public equity and private equity and has an ownership interest in the collection of diversified businesses operating in various countries and numerous sectors.
Among Michael’s many personal accomplishments are his Doctor of Laws Degrees from several distinguished universities in Canada and Jamaica. He has been profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Canadian Business, Black Enterprise, and Times Magazine. Michael Held the esteemed position of Chancellor at Wilfrid Laurier University from 2011-2016. He was awarded the order of Jamaica for outstanding business and Philanthropy and in 2018 Michael was appointed to the order of Ontario an award reserved for those whose contributions have shaped the Province, and the Country.
As a brand manager, author, mentor, and researcher, Dr. Raunica has been working with brands and students across India and Canada since 2010. She has a PhD in Entrepreneurial Marketing and an MBA. She is a member of the Marketing Talent Committee of the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) and a mentor with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC). Being a first-generation immigrant herself, she is very active with international students and new immigrant communities by supporting their needs to understand workplace cultures, build employability skills, and develop cross-cultural adaptability.
In December 2016, Ayman made the transition from Dubai to Canada, armed with a civil engineering degree and 6 years of experience in his field. Ayman attended the IEP 2017 conference, where he forged crucial connections. Starting as a Project Coordinator, his focus was on contributing to Canada's major infrastructure projects. He quickly showcased his skills, resulting in a leap to Project Manager within two years, and progressed to Utilities Manager in huge transit and rail projects. Besides his success since immigrating to Canada, Ayman is dedicated to giving back to the community and newcomers. He actively participates in mentoring programs and on panel discussions. Ayman is a Newcomer Ambassador at Internations, where he aids the professional growth of IEPs. Ayman's journey epitomizes the power of persistence, networking, and community involvement.
Dr. Bhuiyan is an award-winning faculty member and an internationally recognized–academic/professional leader in global public health training, research, and education initiatives, with diverse experience in both developed and developing countries. Throughout his career, his focus has been on improving the way we deploy and refine global health resources – whether guidelines or training programs – to improve health system performance, and the equity of health system performance in local and global contexts. Dr. Bhuiyan is co-creator of the Pilot Master of Sciences MScCH program and Clinical Public Health training program for internationally educated health professionals at Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH), University of Toronto, and co-founder of ITMDs postgraduate bridging program at Toronto Metropolitan University [TMU].
Emilino is a Group Product Manager at Bank of Montreal (BMO), specializing in Mortgage Retention and Client Engagement. He is a seasoned business strategist with 14+ years of experience in driving growth and value within the Canadian Financial Services sector. His career spans roles at Fortune 500 companies, including over 9 years at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), where he held multifaceted roles in Strategy Development, Management Consulting, and Product Management including serving as owner for the First Time Home buyers client segment at the bank. Emiliano holds an MBA from HEC Montreal, a BA in Marketing from Tech of Monterrey (ITESM) in Mexico, and a recent FinTech certificate from the University of Toronto.
Garfield is the Manager, Technology Training and Education with the City of Toronto. He is a high-achieving, strategic and passionate marketing and communication leader and educator with over 15 years of experience in business leadership, marketing and communications strategy, teaching and education administration, and community engagement and development. Garfield has worked with diverse organizations in Canada, Jamaica, the US and the Caribbean in marketing and communications leadership, customer success management, operations management, and education. Garfield has an impressive track record of planning and implementing highly successful brand-building strategies, utilizing modern traditional and new media in SMEs. He is driven by a passion and empathy for people, creative and consumer knowledge and seeks to inspire organizations with a bold vision.

Tishan is a passionate advocate for creativity, he brings more than 20 years of integrated brand communications experience to the table. He has worked on iconic brands including BMW, CIBC, TD, Tangerine, SickKids RBC, Audi, GM, Shaw, TELUS and TJX, to name a few. Currently he is EVP, General Manager of Performance Art Toronto, where he is inspiring and leading a passionate group of thinkers and operators to design innovative solutions that deliver business results for clients across Canada. Prior to joining Performance Art, he was in senior leadership roles at John St., Cossette, BIMM and McCann. Tishan’s ability to nurture top talent in the industry, build new capabilities and influence through transparent and authentic communication has earned him awards across a variety of client businesses.
Laura works with Windmill Microlending as the National Director of Partnerships, Client Success & Media Relations. Prior to joining Windmill, Laura was the Director of Special Projects at Goodmans LLP where she was responsible for delivering on key strategic initiatives including business development and DEI programs. Laura has also worked for the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board where she led the CEO’s strategic communications and global thought leadership program. She helped build FCLT Global, a non-profit entity funded by global organizations, including Unilever and BlackRock. She has also held strategic leadership positions at Scotiabank and Google where she was on the founding team responsible for commercializing YouTube. Laura also sits on Baycrest Hospital’s Finance and Audit Committee.
Bart joined Rogers 14 year ago and currently guides the integrated marketing strategy for its three wireless brands, leading pricing, brand activation, and acquisition marketing. Before joining Rogers, Bart’s experience spans across several progressive roles including, Vice President of Business Development at MyThum Interactive and Universal Music, where he was instrumental in building the digital music market in Canada. He has built a depth of progressive executive experience spanning: pricing, customer base marketing, planning, and product development. He is past Chair of the Spectrum Diversity Group and currently Chair of the Rogers Inclusion & Diversity Council. Bart has an Honours Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts from Queens University and a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business.
Nicky has over 25 years of B2B and B2C marketing experience in the Financial Services sector. For the last eight years, she has worked at TD Bank in various senior roles and presently as VP Marketing, Personal and Business Banking where her team's role is to create and execute compelling marketing strategies. Prior to joining TD Bank, Nicky worked for PayPal as Head of Marketing for Canada where she was hired to create a high performing Marketing team to create and drive acquisition, engagement, and retention strategies. Before PayPal, Nicky spent almost ten years working at American Express in various strategic marketing roles. Nicky sits on two active Boards – the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) and COSTI.
At Metrolinx, Sharyn Byrne-Nearing and her team are leading a complete brand and digital transformation and design thinking led product innovation. Her goal is to build vibrant, beloved and inclusive brands that resonate with consumers and deliver on Metrolinx’s vision of becoming a world class transit system for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. With two decades of experience, Byrne-Nearing has enjoyed collaborative partnerships with the best of Toronto’s advertising, design and PR agencies in the delivery of disruptive and award-winning campaigns, recognized nationally and globally. When Bryne-Nearing is not advocating for breakthrough creative, innovative technology and highly collaborative client/agency partnerships, she’s dragging her family on international adventures, knitting away her stress and loving her two puppies.
Moderator, Finance & Accounting Sector Hub
Sean has over fifteen years experience assisting clients with audits, accounting, taxation and business advisory services. He holds a Master of Accountancy Taxation, and a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant designation. He is a graduate of Brock University where he obtained his degrees including his undergrad degree, a Bachelor of Accounting. As an expert in the sector, he helps his clients with their fiscal audit, including all government related compliance returns, attend Annual General Meetings and present financial statement to their stakeholders, provide business consulting services and guidance for start-up companies and as well, to companies with complex corporate structures. Through his services, his clients have received the benefits of having business valuation, cash flow projections and financial forecast to remain operational. Sean has a large network that allows him to stay connected with emerging needs in the sector. Through his understanding of risk management in operating a business, he has been able to assist his clients with mitigating risks such as fraud. He also use his knowledge in finance to help his clients obtain financing for start-ups and for their business activities expansion.
Shraddha is the Director of Finance & Capital Inc, where she leads the finance department for group companies. She boasts over 11 years of robust experience in the fields of accounting and finance. Her specialty is in Financial Planning & Analysis, Consolidation, Budgeting & Forecasting, and Merger & Acquisition Integraton. Shraddha holds distinguished qualifications, including the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA – Ontario) and Cost and Management Accountant (CMA – ICAI India) designation and a Masters in Audit and Finance from the University of Mumbai. Her unique perspective as a first-generation immigrant, gives her valuable insights into the importance of acquiring the right skills and certification for professional growth and leadership in a competitive business environment.
Beverly is currently employed with Career Connections, a division of the Insurance Institute of Canada, which is dedicated to improving the understanding of insurance and educating students and career seekers about careers available in the industry. In addition, she has over 20 years in the insurance industry. Beverly holds a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation, and is a member of Career Professionals of Canada, The Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers and is an active member of several industry associations and charities geared toward the BIPOC community. Beverly is passionate about helping and educating youth and newcomers on their career journeys. She and the Career Connections team moderate panel discussions, and present at various events on campuses across Canada.
Omar is an associate partner and a CPA in Ontario and Peru. He has an MBA from the ESADE Business School in Barcelona. Omar has over 15 years of progressive experience leading audits for large and complex organizations with operations in developed and emerging markets such as Canada, United States, Australia and China. Omar is originally from Peru. In 2015 he relocated to Toronto where he specializes in mining and renewables leading audits under Canadian and US GAAP requirements. His experience includes a one-year residency at a global gold producer as a director of financial reporting and corporate accounting looking after the regulatory filings, internal accounting matters and working with the external auditors.
Mihaela Dima's journey began in Romania, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting. With a thirst for new experiences, she ventured to Italy and embarked on a career in accounting. Mihaela's path then led her to Canada, where she commenced her journey to become a CPA, CMA marking the beginning of a new chapter in her professional life. Upon arriving in Canada, Mihaela took some time to appreciate the beauty of her new surroundings before launching her job search. Her journey has been marked by challenges and growth, starting as an Accountant, gradually advancing to become a Senior Accountant and today a Financial Controller with Paging Network of Canada.

Dr. Rahim Karim is the President & CEO of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM), a pan Canadian academic institution with campus locations in Toronto, Ontario and Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. He has an abundance of global leadership experience in the education and health sectors. His background also includes significant governance and external committee involvement including being an active volunteer within the community. An award-winning administrator, educator and clinician, Dr. Karim has operated successful multidisciplinary health clinics, published in peer-reviewed journals, and presented at various local and international conferences. Dr. Karim is the recipient of the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers (Canadian Honour) from the Governor General of Canada.
With over a decade of dedicated work experience, Farnaz is a seasoned career coach, specializing in guiding internationally trained professionals through their career journeys in Canada. Farnaz currently holds the pivotal role of managing a highly successful bridging program tailored to internationally trained healthcare professionals who aspire to pursue alternative career paths in the Canadian healthcare landscape. Farnaz's unique program (ISAGE) primarily focuses on gerontology, a vital and rapidly evolving field within the healthcare sector. Her expertise extends to medical doctors, nurses, public health specialists, and psychologists, all of whom share a common aspiration to contribute their skills to the long-term care sector in Canada.
Ramesh is an Asst. Professor at the school of nursing. Ramesh is an internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) with more than 30 years of experience in Clinicals, Teaching, Research, and Community Service gained at various institutions in India, Oman, and Canada. Ramesh has been a critical care nurse for more than 15 years. He worked as an ICU RN and a clinical practice leader in the ICU. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science degree in nursing, and a doctoral degree in nursing. He is the first doctoral graduate in nursing at York University, Canada. He is the Coordinator of the Internationally Educated Nurses BScN Program at York University, in Ontario.
Gordhan is an MD and after completing his medical degree, he practiced Medicine for ten years in India as a General Medical Practitioner with the Government of Rajasthan. He immigrated from India to Canada in 2004, and settled down in Burlington, Ontario. He is presently working with AstraZeneca as a Global Development Scientist Director in Late-Stage Oncology Clinical Development. Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Gordhan worked with Merck as an Oncology Clinical Scientist for several years. With over 25 years of diverse experience in medical practice and clinical research, Gordhan’s passion for Oncology drug development is what drives him to work towards a future where novel therapies are available to the patients who need them the most.
Rola is the Program Manager at CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) – an organization that supports IENs pre and post arrival relaunch their career in Canada. She brings 25 years of broad range experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, and nursing education. Rola held several positions as a professional education development consultant, professor assistant, facilitator, and quality consultant in Canada and Internationally. Rola is committed to supporting nurses nationally and internationally through mentoring, influencing policy, and improving the quality of healthcare services; ensuring nurses practice in a safe, diverse, equitable, inclusive, and people centred environment. She is the co-author of a book on mentoring in nursing. Her contribution includes a chapter on the successful transition of IENs to the Canadian workplace through mentorship.

Aamir Sardar is a Technology Leader with 25+ years of International Experience across multiple geographies (Asia-Pacific, Middle East-&-Africa, Americas), with a proven track record of building Innovative Products, driving successful Sales Strategy, and building winning Alliances for Growth and BD. He has built/managed high-achieving teams from the ground-up, several times during his career. Aamir has broad Domain experience, in the areas of Data Security/Privacy, Big Data Analytics, Cloud/Edge Networks, 5G, IOT, AI/Machine Learning, SaaS, BSS/OSS, Managed Services/Outsourcing, Design Thinking, UI/UX, Agile DevOps, Application/Software Development, and Digital Transformation. Mahesh is a passionate IT developer with a relentless drive to transform ideas into innovative, efficient, and user-friendly solutions. With a deep-rooted love for all things tech, he is constantly seeking new challenges and opportunities to expand his horizons. In 2019, he embarked on a transformative journey in Canada. Starting as a Restaurant Chef, he steadily climbed the professional ladder, transitioning to a leadership role at Walmart, and later to Claims Advisor at TD. A year ago, he decided to further enhance his skills and knowledge by enrolling in a Full Stack .NET Cloud Developer program at Humber College. This decision marked a pivotal moment in his career and led to his true calling as an IT Developer at TD Bank.
Sarah Qureshi is a globally recognized Cybersecurity expert with demonstrated success in leading investigations during high-profile breach situations and achieving resilience against cyber attacks targetting Canada’s critical infrastructure entities. Ms. Qureshi is a broadly experienced individual who has developed a bespoke Cybersecurity Program Implementation Framework that expedites public and private sector’s security compliance journeys. She is known for promoting a risk management culture within the organizations through her enthusiasm for innovation in privacy and cybersecurity.
Joe has been working with the City of Toronto as a senior advisor for approximatley 15 years helping to build and connect the technology sector. He helps technology firms with meet-ups, career fairs, and acess to incentives. He was involved in the Collsion conference and recently hosted a cybersecurity panel.
Syed is a hands-on CFO and trusted strategic adviser with business acumen and an entrepreneurial mindset. He has extensive experience in the FinTech industry, leading teams to optimize financial outcomes through effective use of Technology. He has been in the IT industry from the early onset of his career, starting as an IT Manager and has been recognized for generating innovative solutions within the Fintech industry. A leader working in Technology, FMCG, manufacturing, service industry and not-for-profit, from start-up to high-growth companies. Proven areas of expertise include System deployment and implementation, As a strategic Fintech professional with strong business acumen, he enjoys driving the numbers and as a peer and mentor, Syed thrives on accelerating the growth and development of others around him
Mahdi Raza has a long-standing passion for cybersecurity and is dedicated to educating the public and private sectors about its importance. Alongside siberX, Mahdi is also the founder of Cyber Gamified and ICE-VR. Using innovative approaches to train individuals and organizations in cybersecurity, Cyber Gamified uses tabletop games to create unforgettable experiences in cybersecurity training, while ICE-VR uses virtual reality and cyber escape rooms to provide immersive training experiences. He is the author of “The Art of Selling Cybersecurity” which focuses on practical cybersecurity sales tools to help people generate more leads and increase their sales performance in the cybersecurity industry. He loves entertaining his family and friends through his crafty culinary skills, exploring nature through biking or hiking, or immersing himself in rich cultures around the world.

Pritam has been working with academic projects in post-secondary institutions for the last three decades. With a basic degree in engineering followed by postgraduate degrees in business, he is a certified project management professional. In the last decade he has been involved in helping internationally trained newcomer individuals – engineers, IT professionals and supply chain professionals – to upgrade their technical skills and secure employment in their field in Canada. As an immigrant to Canada himself, he takes pride in this work, which he continues in his current role as the manager of immigrant programs and services at Humber College.
Mehemed is a Professional Engineer (Ontario and Alberta) with over 25 years of comprehensive experience in the fields of transportation engineering, project and program management, and business development in the public and private sectors. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Traffic/ Transportation Engineering. Mehemed is a long-time advocate and volunteer in the engineering community and professional associations, including Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), Ontario Traffic Council (OTC), Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) Ontario, Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE), Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), and Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). His volunteer contribution includes mentorship and guidance to new engineering graduates and internationally trained engineers.
Paola Cetares is a proud Canadian and Colombian immigrant, currently holding the position of Public Affairs Manager at the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. She is also a board member of the Hispanic Women Network. With a diverse background that includes Colombian law expertise, a Communications degree, an MBA, and an MFA, her career has traversed law, journalism, film production, and public relations. Her commitment lies in achieving results through effective communication, legal acumen, and a comprehensive understanding of government affairs.
Ian has over 22 years of diversified work experience in various capacities in Construction Engineering and Management for a variety of Residential and Commercial Construction Projects. He has been Involved with multiple construction projects and loans ranging between $100K to $250M+. He is the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Tolliver International incorporated. It is the first and currently only majority-owned and operated Black Cost Consulting and Construction Management Company in Canada. He is the former the Director of Construction at Avrance Corp Developments. He is currently the founder, President, and Director of Construction at the Ontario Black Contractors Association (OBCA), a not-for-profit association that is dedicated to serving as a voice for Black Contractors in Ontario.
Presentor: Essential and Transferable Skills for the Future Workforce
This session will provide an overview of the skills and employment landscape faced by internationally educated professionals (IEPs) in Canada. Issues related to in-demand skills, skills training and development, employment and entrepreneurship will be discussed. The session will also highlight some important types of initiatives that can help address many of the challenges faced by IEPs and open opportunities and pathways for them. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion where participants will be able to share and learn from each other’s experiences.
Dr. Marsiaj is currently Director, Research - Special Projects at the Diversity Institute, in the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he leads work for the Future Skills Centre, including action research projects focused on pathways to employment for newcomers and refugees. Prior to joining the Diversity Institute, he worked at the Indigenous Advanced Education and Skills Council, where he played a leadership role in the development of Indigenous quality assurance for Indigenous Institutes in the province of Ontario. Originally from Brazil, he received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto and taught at the University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, and York University (Glendon College), specializing in international development, human rights, democratic participation and governance, sexual and gender diversity issues.

Carlos is an I.T. professional and entrepreneur who is originally from Peru. During his career as an IT Professional, he has worked for and with companies large and small, in South America, Africa and North America. He holds an MBA from the University of Toronto (U of T). After graduating from U of T in 1984, Carlos founded Tenet Computer Group Inc., a Toronto-based I.T. solutions provider. In 2016 he made a successful exit from Tenet Computer Group Inc and sold it, while retaining ownership of the software division to launch Techmien Corp, to continue developing innovative solutions for government and corporations. Carlos also participates in several advisory boards and volunteers as the President of Hispanotech, an association dedicated to accelerating the success of Latin American technology professionals in Canada. He is also President of the Alma Children’s Education Foundation, dedicated to improving education in remote regions of South America.

The session will also highlight some important types of initiatives that can help address many of the challenges faced by IEPs and open opportunities and pathways for them. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion where participants will be able to share and learn from each other’s experiences.
