The IEP Conference is a unique Canadian initiative for Internationally Educated Professionals (IEPs) taking interactive learning, economic development, and stakeholder awareness to unprecedented levels. Every delegate can engage in a myriad of career and professional development experiences guided and encouraged every step of the way by subject matter experts from licensing bodies, educational institutions, professional associations, skilled facilitators, employers and successful IEPs.

Nipissing First Nation - Conference Opening: Drum and Dance Ceremony

Steve Teekens is the Executive Director at Na-Me-Res (Native Men’s Residence) where he has worked since 2008. He has been working with the marginalized and homeless sector in Toronto since 1995. Steve is a member of Nipissing First Nation, has a master’s degree in public administration from Queen’s University. Steve is very active in Toronto’s Indigenous Community where he volunteers at Toronto Aboriginal Social Services Council (TASSC), Aboriginal Legal Services Community Council Program. Steve also teaches traditional drumming and to the youth and men at various Native organizations inside and outside of Toronto. Steve enjoys working and volunteering in the Indigenous Community and wishes to see people overcome their obstacles and find the resilience in themselves to succeed in life.

Faisal Kazi is the President and CEO of Siemens Canada. Mr. Kazi is responsible for leading the overall strategic management, direction and leadership of Siemens activities in Canada.
In addition to his role as President and CEO, Mr. Kazi is responsible for the leadership of the Smart Infrastructure business and serves as a board member of multiple Siemens affiliates in Canada.
Mr. Kazi joined Siemens in 1990 and has worked in various areas of the organization, including Siemens Energy, Industry, IT and Infrastructure businesses in Germany, The Netherlands, Brazil and the United States. In 2011, he joined Siemens Canada as the regional and sales head of the Transformers business in North and South America. He has also led the Siemens Transmission division for North America.

Among Michael’s many personal accomplishments are his Doctor of Laws Degrees from several distinguished universities in Canada and Jamaica. He has been profiled in Forbes, Fortune, Canadian Business, Black Enterprise, and Times Magazine. Michael Held the esteemed position of Chancellor at Wilfrid Laurier University from 2011-2016. Dr. Raunica Ahluwalia

As a brand manager, author, mentor, and researcher, Dr. Raunica has been working with brands and students across India and Canada since 2010. She has a PhD in Entrepreneurial Marketing and an MBA. She is a member of the Marketing Talent Committee of the Canadian Marketing Association (CMA) and a mentor with the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC). Being a first-generation immigrant herself, she is very active with international students and new immigrant communities by supporting their needs to understand workplace cultures, build employability skills, and develop cross-cultural adaptability.

Ayman Shash, PMP PGMP

In December 2016, Ayman made the transition from Dubai to Canada, armed with a civil engineering degree and 6 years of experience in his field. Ayman attended the IEP 2017 conference, where he forged crucial connections. Starting as a Project Coordinator, his focus was on contributing to Canada's major infrastructure projects. He quickly showcased his skills, resulting in a leap to Project Manager within two years, and progressed to Utilities Manager in huge transit and rail projects. Besides his success since immigrating to Canada, Ayman is dedicated to giving back to the community and newcomers. He actively participates in mentoring programs and on panel discussions. Dr. Shafi Bhuiyan PhD, MBBS, MPH, MBA

Dr. Bhuiyan is an award-winning faculty member and an internationally recognized–academic/professional leader in global public health training, research, and education initiatives, with diverse experience in both developed and developing countries. Throughout his career, his focus has been on improving the way we deploy and refine global health resources – whether guidelines or training programs – to improve health system performance, and the equity of health system performance in local and global contexts. Dr. Bhuiyan is co-creator of the Pilot Master of Sciences MScCH program and Clinical Public Health training program for internationally educated health professionals at Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH), University of Toronto, and co-founder of ITMDs postgraduate bridging program at Toronto Metropolitan University [TMU].

Bart Nickerson

Bart joined Rogers 14 year ago and currently guides the integrated marketing strategy for its three wireless brands, leading pricing, brand activation, and acquisition marketing. Before joining Rogers, Bart’s experience spans across several progressive roles including, Vice President of Business Development at MyThum Interactive and Universal Music, where he was instrumental in building the digital music market in Canada. He has built a depth of progressive executive experience spanning: pricing, customer base marketing, planning, and product development. Omar is originally from Peru. In 2015 he relocated to Toronto where he specializes in mining and renewables leading audits under Canadian and US GAAP requirements. Ramesh has been a critical care nurse for more than 15 years. He worked as an ICU RN and a clinical practice leader in the ICU. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science degree in nursing, and a doctoral degree in nursing. He is the first doctoral graduate in nursing at York University, Canada. He is the Coordinator of the Internationally Educated Nurses BScN Program at York University, in Ontario.

Dr. Gordhan S. Jethoo

Gordhan is an MD and after completing his medical degree, he practiced Medicine for ten years in India as a General Medical Practitioner with the Government of Rajasthan. He immigrated from India to Canada in 2004, and settled down in Burlington, Ontario. He is presently working with AstraZeneca as a Global Development Scientist Director in Late-Stage Oncology Clinical Development. Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Gordhan worked with Merck as an Oncology Clinical Scientist for several years. With over 25 years of diverse experience in medical practice and clinical research, Gordhan’s passion for Oncology drug development is what drives him to work towards a future where novel therapies are available to the patients who need them the most.

Rola is the Program Manager at CARE Centre for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) – an organization that supports IENs pre and post arrival relaunch their career in Canada. She brings 25 years of broad range experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, and nursing education. Rola held several positions as a professional education development consultant, professor assistant, facilitator, and quality consultant in Canada and Internationally. Rola is committed to supporting nurses nationally and internationally through mentoring, influencing policy, and improving the quality of healthcare services; ensuring nurses practice in a safe, diverse, equitable, inclusive, and people centred environment. She is the co-author of a book on mentoring in nursing. Her contribution includes a chapter on the successful transition of IENs to the Canadian workplace through mentorship.

Pritam Shrestha

Pritam has been working with academic projects in post-secondary institutions for the last three decades. With a basic degree in engineering followed by postgraduate degrees in business, he is a certified project management professional. In the last decade he has been involved in helping internationally trained newcomer individuals – engineers, IT professionals and supply chain professionals – to upgrade their technical skills and secure employment in their field in Canada. As an immigrant to Canada himself, he takes pride in this work, which he continues in his current role as the manager of immigrant programs and services at Humber College.

Mehemed is a Professional Engineer (Ontario and Alberta) with over 25 years of comprehensive experience in the fields of transportation engineering, project and program management, and business development in the public and private sectors. He holds a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Traffic/ Transportation Engineering. Mehemed is a long-time advocate and volunteer in the engineering community and professional associations, including Transportation Association of Canada (TAC), Ontario Traffic Council (OTC), Association of Consulting Engineering Companies (ACEC) Ontario, Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers (CITE), Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), and Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO). His volunteer contribution includes mentorship and guidance to new engineering graduates and internationally trained engineers.

Paola Cetares, MBA, MFA (She/Her/Ella)

Paola Cetares is a proud Canadian and Colombian immigrant, currently holding the position of Public Affairs Manager at the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers. She is also a board member of the Hispanic Women Network. With a diverse background that includes Colombian law expertise, a Communications degree, an MBA, and an MFA, her career has traversed law, journalism, film production, and public relations. Her commitment lies in achieving results through effective communication, legal acumen, and a comprehensive understanding of government affairs.

Ian Tolliver

Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer, Tolliver International Incorporated

Ian has over 22 years of diversified work experience in various capacities in Construction Engineering and Management for a variety of Residential and Commercial Construction Projects. He has been Involved with multiple construction projects and loans ranging between $100K to $250M+. He is the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Tolliver International incorporated. It is the first and currently only majority-owned and operated Black Cost Consulting and Construction Management Company in Canada. He is the former the Director of Construction at Avrance Corp Developments. He is currently the founder, President, and Director of Construction at the Ontario Black Contractors Association (OBCA), a not-for-profit association that is dedicated to serving as a voice for Black Contractors in Ontario.

Presentor: Essential and Transferable Skills for the Future Workforce

This session will provide an overview of the skills and employment landscape faced by internationally educated professionals (IEPs) in Canada. Issues related to in-demand skills, skills training and development, employment and entrepreneurship will be discussed. The session will also highlight some important types of initiatives that can help address many of the challenges faced by IEPs and open opportunities and pathways for them. The presentation will be followed by an open discussion where participants will be able to share and learn from each other’s experiences.

Dr. Marsiaj is currently Director, Research - Special Projects at the Diversity Institute, in the Ted Rogers School of Management at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he leads work for the Future Skills Centre, including action research projects focused on pathways to employment for newcomers and refugees. Prior to joining the Diversity Institute, he worked at the Indigenous Advanced Education and Skills Council, where he played a leadership role in the development of Indigenous quality assurance for Indigenous Institutes in the province of Ontario. Originally from Brazil, he received his PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto and taught at the University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, and York University (Glendon College), specializing in international development, human rights, democratic participation and governance, sexual and gender diversity issues.

During his career as an IT Professional, he has worked for and with companies large and small, in South America, Africa and North America. He holds an MBA from the University of Toronto (U of T). After graduating from U of T in 1984, Carlos founded Tenet Computer Group Inc., a Toronto-based I.T. solutions provider. In 2016 he made a successful exit from Tenet Computer Group Inc and sold it, while retaining ownership of the software division to launch Techmien Corp, to continue developing innovative solutions for government and corporations. Carlos also participates in several advisory boards and volunteers as the President of Hispanotech, an association dedicated to accelerating the success of Latin American technology professionals in Canada. He is also President of the Alma Children’s Education Foundation, dedicated to improving education in remote regions of South America.
